CPCA Website Redesign

The Canadian Process Control Association, or the CPCA, is the only trade association for the instrumentation and process industry in Canada. Members manufacture and distribute instrumentation and automation products to industries in the pulp and paper sector, oil and gas, and more. Some member companies have as few as 5 employees and operate strictly in Canada, while others are large multinationals, operating at home and abroad. All told, there are about 30-40 members from coast to coast. The CPCA endeavours to be a voice for the industry, connecting members to each other, and providing training opportunities, while also advocating at various levels of government to ensure regulations reflect needs.

Research - Survey

After consulting with our clients, we reached out to existing users of the CPCA website. We set up an online survey and asked them to fill it out.

  • Most users accessed the website for statistics and industry reports, following industry events.

  • 80% of users participate with the CPCA on a monthly basis.

  • There is a variation in the reputation of the members related to the CPCA from 10 years to over 40 years.

.

Based on the team Elixir we created a style guide to capture the team's unique voice and style.

Persona

Style Guide

Personas

Based on the interviews and surveys, we created four main personas.

To redesign the official website redesign that would cater to both types of users

accessing the website;

i) association members who are looking for research and information resources

ii) users who have not committed to membership but are seeking more information

and want to learn about the association.

.

Problem Defination

• Provide an information hub for users
• Share industry research and data
• Create an online community for members

• Attract new members, specifically under the age of 45

User Journey

Following the user research and persona production, we produced user journeys based on each persona. User journeys are a flowchart that illustrates the experiences a user has while interacting with the website, as shown below.

Design Architecture

We started with a card sorting technique which allowed us to analyze the current site navigation independent of the current architecture. After this exercise, we went on to create the reorganized information architecture in a way that can be visually seen, as shown below.

Wire Frames

We first started by designing low-fidelity wireframes through a digital drawing tool called miro. This allowed us to digitally sketch in virtual pen and paper to visualize our ideas for the redesign. We then created high fidelity wireframes based on our low fidelity wireframes on Adobe XD to start envisioning our ideas into real designs. We based our wireframes on key changes we wanted to make to the website, which included:

  • Home page, including top main navigation

  • Our Members page

  • Events Calendar page

  • Training Search page

  • Testimonial carousels

After that, we were able to use the same program to connect our high-fidelity wireframes into interactive prototypes of the new website.

Interactive Component -Calendar

The interactive component is a calendar that would allow members to find all the past and upcoming meetings, and events that fit their needs, based on filter options and convenience.

Next Steps

  • Development: CPCA has also expressed interest in proceeding to a development phase to bring our designs to life. To help simplify and streamline the new website creation, we have recommended a WordPress theme based on the CPCA’s needs. The chosen template called ‘Astra’ allows for a clean, modern look and feel, and allows for additional plugins to be used to add on all the interactive components such as the interactive calendar.

  • User Testing: Upon the successful implementation of the new design to the website, it would be a great time to collect user feedback on how they find the update.
